West Bengal police detained five members of a family in Murshidabad district for allegedly entering India illegally from Bangladesh and living there for many years. The group includes Ujir Ali, 43, his wife Jainur Khatun, 36, and their three sons aged 15, 10 and 4. Their family home is in Chapainawabganj district of Bangladesh. Police said Ali crossed the border about 13 years ago and settled in Sagardighi, where he worked as a mason in southern India and bought land to build a house. He reportedly obtained a voter ID and Aadhaar card with false papers. Two of the children were born in India, while the eldest came with him. The older boys attend school in classes 8 and 4. After an operation on Saturday, officers took the family into custody and sent them to a holding centre in Ahiran. Further probes are under way into how they stayed undetected and secured official documents.
