A 38-year-old woman was detained in Brazil on charges of impersonating a 12-year-old girl to mislead a couple who hosted her for over a year. Amanda Maria Souza de Oliveira faces accusations of fraud and false identity in the southern state of Santa Catarina. For nearly 16 months in Joinville, she reportedly received full financial support, a room furnished with toys and childlike items, and a celebration for her claimed 12th birthday. Local outlets have covered the story extensively, highlighting surprise at how long the alleged ruse continued. Following her arrest more than a week ago, records showed prior charges against Oliveira in other states for comparable deceptions. Prosecutor Viviane Soares described an intricate scheme of fabricated identity and emotional manipulation aimed at gaining benefits. The couple stated Oliveira first met them at their evangelical church, presenting herself as 18-year-old Gabrielle facing money and health issues, which led them to offer shelter. She later reportedly altered her account, saying she was actually 11 but looked older due to forced hormone use and abuse by her father. She also allegedly convinced the family to skip school enrollment or legal adoption to avoid detection by her father. Suspicion arose when a visiting aunt noticed inconsistencies and found online reports of a similar incident in Rio de Janeiro from three years prior. Other claimed victims shared videos and photos of Oliveira using pacifiers and bottles while speaking childishly. The oldest known case dates to the late 2000s in Ceará, where she allegedly told police she was 12 and had been abused and exploited. Her lawyer, Rafael Luiz Siewert, noted signs warranting a psychiatric assessment after meeting her. The judge approved the evaluation, pausing proceedings until her fitness for trial is determined. She is currently held in custody.
