The central government has named Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth as the next Chief of the Army Staff with the rank of General. He currently holds the position of Vice Chief. The appointment takes effect from the afternoon of 30 June 2026, the Defence Ministry announced. Lt Gen Seth will take charge after General Upendra Dwivedi retires on the same day. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy and an Armoured Corps officer, he has nearly four decades of service in command, staff and strategic roles.
