Kolkata police arrested five individuals on Thursday, including the structural engineer, following the collapse of an under-construction warehouse in Taratala the previous day that killed five workers. The incident occurred around 12:05 p.m. at Transport Depot Road, trapping several labourers under debris. Five were later declared dead at hospital. Rescue efforts involved Kolkata Police, municipal staff, fire services, civil defence and NDRF teams, with operations ongoing. An FIR was registered at Taratala police station under sections 105, 110 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, naming six persons. Five suspects, among them structural engineer Kamal Samanta, were taken into custody. The case was transferred to the Detective Department, where a special investigation team led by its deputy commissioner and six other officers was formed. The warehouse stood on land leased from Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority. Around 50 to 60 workers were present at the time. At least 18 people were feared trapped. The Chief Minister ordered a halt to all construction in Kolkata Municipal Corporation limits pending an audit due by July 31. The army deployed four columns from the Eastern Command to assist. Attempts to reach those buried included drilling holes and supplying oxygen and food.
