Massage guns represent the newest trend in vibration therapy, a practice dating back to ancient Greece. Experts caution that these tools must be handled carefully. A man in his twenties applied a massage gun on and around his eyes, resulting in damage to the retinas. Similar incidents have occurred but are rarely recorded. Ophthalmologists Niamh O’Connell and Ashraf Khan reported in BMJ Case Reports that the man believed eye massage would ease fatigue. He performed the routine weekly for three months, with sessions lasting several minutes. This led to multiple retinal tears and bruising known as commotio retinae in both eyes. His right retina also detached from the eye wall, a condition called retinal dialysis that risks permanent vision loss. The doctors stated the injuries likely stemmed from direct percussive use on the eye, as the patient had no other risk factors such as high myopia or prior surgery. The case marks the first reported instance of retinal dialysis with bilateral tears linked to massage gun use. The man experienced persistent floaters and flashing lights. No recent head trauma or family eye issues were found. He later admitted using the device directly on his eyes after specific questioning. Laser treatments repaired the damage, and he retained full vision. Other users have suffered detached retinas and lasting vision reduction. Prompt medical attention six days after symptoms aided his recovery. Massage guns are classified as low-risk wellness products and require no regulatory approval. The ophthalmologists call for greater awareness of risks, noting limited safety data and absent guidelines. The patient was unaware of warnings against eye use in the instructions. Another reported case involved muscle damage from thigh application. Evidence shows massage guns can aid muscle strength and flexibility when used moderately and kept away from the eyes. The case stresses the potential for serious retinal harm and the importance of clear manufacturer warnings.
