Technology entrepreneur and longevity advocate Bryan Johnson, who invests millions yearly in health optimisation, has announced a diagnosis of autoimmune gastritis. This chronic condition involves the immune system attacking the stomach lining.
In a detailed post on X, Johnson described the finding as both a personal and scientific issue. He intends to share his efforts to understand and address the disorder publicly.
He wrote that he has an autoimmune disease in which the stomach is attacking itself. He noted that two to five percent of people may have the condition, with many cases likely undetected.
Johnson, aged 48, was diagnosed in May following years of low iron levels and prior autoimmune thyroid disease. His history includes hypothyroidism identified at age 21, treated with hormone replacement. Despite interventions, low ferritin persisted for over a decade.
After updating his health programme this year, including tests such as colonoscopy, endoscopy, blood analysis and biopsies, elevated anti-parietal cell antibodies confirmed early-stage autoimmune gastritis.
The condition often remains hidden until it leads to deficiencies in iron or vitamin B12, anaemia or higher risks of gastric issues. Johnson stated that standard checks frequently overlook early low ferritin without anaemia.
His iron levels have been addressed via intravenous infusion. He plans ongoing monitoring and experimental approaches, though no approved cure exists and treatment focuses on management.
Johnson emphasised proactive screening, noting that lack of symptoms does not confirm health. He urged attention to wellbeing over daily trivial matters.
