A tense standoff took place in Uttar Pradesh’s Gonda district on Friday when a woman ascended a nearly 100-metre communication tower near the railway station along with her three children. She refused to descend until authorities arranged a meeting with a man she said had left her after years of promises.

The woman stayed on the structure for eight to ten hours, leading police, railway protection personnel, district officials and disaster response teams to launch a coordinated operation. She had earlier lodged a complaint accusing the man, identified as Ram Ikbal, of rape on the false assurance of marriage. She claimed police had pledged to summon him for discussions but failed to do so on several dates.

The incident began early in the morning at a microwave facility opposite the station. Despite repeated appeals, the woman moved higher as temperatures increased. Teams placed protective nets and cushions underneath while negotiators maintained phone contact and supplied water and oral rehydration solution.

The children were eventually lowered one by one, followed by the woman in the afternoon with assistance from rescue workers. She later stated that earlier assurances from police had not been honoured. A local officer confirmed the woman had carried out a similar protest about a month earlier and that the man now works in Delhi. Access to the tower was gained through an unsecured railway store. The existing case against the man remains under investigation, with further inquiry ordered into the latest event.
