For years biologists assumed ravens located meals by trailing wolves until a kill occurred. New research near Yellowstone National Park indicates the birds employ a more advanced approach. Rather than continuously shadowing wolves, ravens recall locations where kills are probable and fly directly there, often traveling long distances independently. Data from two and a half years of GPS tracking support this view. The birds appear to form mental maps of productive hunting zones and use memory to forecast food availability. One researcher noted that ravens can fly six hours straight to a carcass site. The project followed 69 ravens along with 20 wolves and 11 cougars, producing hundreds of thousands of raven positions plus many more from the predators. Comparison with verified kills overturned earlier ideas. Birds returned repeatedly to zones with frequent kills instead of staying near wolves. Only one instance showed a raven trailing a wolf beyond one kilometer for over an hour. Most relied on memory, with some traveling 155 kilometers daily to likely carcass areas and others staying away for months before returning. Wolf kills cluster in open valleys, flat ground and snowy spots near streams or roads, allowing ravens to learn these patterns. Ravens visited nearly half of wolf kills within a week but only a quarter of cougar kills, reflecting differences in hunting style and carcass exposure. Wolves hunt in groups in open areas while cougars hunt alone in cover and hide remains. Ravens still use immediate signals like sounds or other scavengers when close, yet memory directs their initial search decisions.
