Indian authorities announced Friday the removal of two smartphone applications after reports emerged that certain electric rickshaws could be disabled remotely due to a security vulnerability in lower-cost models. Many such vehicles rely on Chinese-made Bluetooth battery units without adequate protections. Recent videos circulating online showed individuals using apps to connect via Bluetooth and stop the vehicles by interrupting motor power during operation. Officials could not confirm the videos’ accuracy independently. A senior technology ministry representative stated that the apps had been flagged and removed from stores. Reports identified them as Chinese-developed tools named BAT-BMS and Epoch Li-ion. Only vehicles with unsecured lithium battery systems were impacted, unlike those using lead-acid batteries. One driver in New Delhi described losing income after his vehicle stopped, forcing him to push it several kilometers in high heat for repairs, with passengers declining payment. Local transport officials indicated police would examine the events.
