Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on July 4, 2026, that talks on a proposed free trade agreement with Peru are unlikely to finish soon because of concerns over market access for certain goods.

He noted specific issues where India cannot grant entry to various products and told reporters in New Delhi that he does not expect the Peru deal to advance quickly. The comments were made during a toy industry exhibition.

Discussions on the India-Peru FTA began in 2017.

On the India-Canada FTA, Goyal said a team of Indian officials will travel to Canada for the next round of talks. He added that the process is moving forward and efforts are underway to reach a conclusion within roughly six months.

Goyal also stated that on July 13 he will join External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw in Brussels for the India-EU Trade and Technology Council meeting. The aim is to support implementation of the recently finalized FTA.
