When citizens neglect basic civic responsibility, the effects impact the entire community. Such acts must face consequences to maintain public order and hygiene. In Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, a city corporation official was attacked while trying to halt illegal waste disposal into the Amayizhanjan Canal. Protests followed the assault. The injured official, identified as Suresh, received treatment at Fort Hospital. Reports indicate he was struck by a motorcycle before being beaten after intervening. The waste originated from a nearby tea stall, which authorities later sealed. Mayor V.V. Rajesh stated that organized groups collect fees for waste removal from institutions including hospitals, then dump it illegally while carrying weapons to resist officials. The city police commissioner assessed the site. After visiting the victim, the mayor confirmed that names of suspects were provided to police and that the corporation would pursue strict measures, offering the official medical, legal and financial support. The canal has a history of pollution. In July 2024, sanitation worker Joy, aged 47, died after being swept away during cleaning operations. He worked for a private contractor clearing a tunnel section under the railway station. A large search involving multiple agencies recovered his body downstream amid debris. Despite the incident, dumping continues to avoid official collection fees. The BJP assumed control of the corporation on December 26, 2025, ending prior Left Front dominance. Political tensions have persisted since, with the party alleging opposition efforts to disrupt administration through protests, legal challenges and other actions. Earlier clashes inside corporation premises injured several BJP councillors. The party claims repeated attempts to obstruct daily operations and create civic problems.
