The Home Edit is a weekly series curated by Shiny Varghese that invites architects and designers to share practical expertise on home ideas. Whether building, renovating or refreshing a space, the series offers actionable advice to support better choices. In this edition, Shabnam Gupta provides guidance on achieving efficient storage.
Effective storage goes beyond large wardrobes. It simplifies daily routines, maintains order and preserves an attractive appearance. The examples illustrate how units can integrate seamlessly, from full-height cabinets to concealed areas, without crowding rooms. The advantage is that major renovations are unnecessary. Thoughtful selections can organise even compact apartments and create a sense of space.
1) Build upward rather than outward: Maximise wall height with floor-to-ceiling wardrobes or simple loft areas above doors or beds. These hold suitcases, seasonal clothing and rarely used items without requiring additional floor space.
2) Select furniture with multiple uses: Opt for pieces such as sofa beds, wall-folding beds or storage ottomans. They reduce the need for extra rooms while concealing clutter.
3) Assign dedicated zones: Allocate specific drawers, shelves or containers for each item type. Clear organisation keeps surfaces free and speeds up retrieval.
4) Combine open and closed storage: Place everyday items behind doors for a calm look while displaying favoured objects on open shelves or in glass cabinets.
5) Incorporate movable elements: Sliding panels or partitions can divide areas like a study nook from a bedroom, offering flexibility between privacy and openness.
6) Avoid overloading single units: Overfilled cupboards become disorganised quickly and cause fittings to wear faster. Leave space for continued usability.
7) Add internal lighting: Install simple LED strips or sensor lights inside cabinets to improve visibility and give storage a refined feel.
8) Prioritise function alongside style: Ensure drawers and shelves are reachable and practical before choosing attractive designs.
9) Utilise corners and awkward spaces: Add corner shelves, pull-out units or loft storage above beds or behind doors to maximise every area.
10) Introduce changes gradually: Begin with small additions such as beds with drawers or storage coffee tables rather than complete overhauls. Effective storage should integrate smoothly into existing homes.
