Warner Bros. released the initial full trailer for Digger, giving viewers a clear preview of Tom Cruise’s altered appearance in Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s latest film since Bardo. Due in theaters in October, the movie marks Cruise’s departure from action series for an unusual part. He plays Digger Rockwell, a rich oil executive whose company faces ties to a major environmental crisis that risks worldwide conflict. Rockwell then pursues a frantic effort to persuade others he alone can prevent disaster. The footage displays Cruise using heavy makeup, grey hair, added weight and a regional accent that renders him almost unrecognizable. This ranks among his most altered roles since portraying Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder. Supporting performers include John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Jesse Plemons, Michael Stuhlbarg and Sophie Wilde. At the trailer event on the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles, Cruise called the project unlike prior work by either himself or the director. He noted it offered challenges neither had faced before and described the result as entirely original. Cruise also mentioned his admiration for Iñárritu after seeing Amores Perros, which he praised for its acting, imagery and narrative style. He added that Iñárritu read the script aloud over several days ahead of filming to convey the intended approach. In a recorded statement, Iñárritu said the concept for Digger arose after finishing The Revenant. Filmed in VistaVision, a large-format film process recently revived in other productions, Digger is positioned as a key entry in Warner Bros.’ awards push this year. For Cruise, after years focused on Top Gun and Mission: Impossible entries, the film signals a shift back to dramatic roles and stands as one of the most daring efforts in his long career.
