In a new effort to improve women’s safety, the Baghpat district administration has introduced a personal alarm device shaped like a keychain. The compact tool fits easily in a purse, bag or with keys. When activated during an emergency, it produces a loud siren and flashing light to draw attention from people nearby.

District Magistrate Asmita Lal launched the scheme by handing out the devices to women staff at the Collectorate. Officials noted that the alarm runs for about two minutes and can be heard up to 50 metres away, allowing quick response from bystanders.

The device also includes a flashlight and can be switched on instantly if a woman feels threatened while travelling or in any risky situation. Lal said the alarm is simple to carry and use, and the siren helps alert others who may then assist.

The project falls under the central Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign. Devices have so far gone to women employees at the Collectorate, with plans to extend distribution to schoolgirls, working women, Anganwadi and ASHA workers, ANMs and girls receiving the HPV vaccine.

Lal described women’s safety as a shared duty and said the devices aim to give women and girls more confidence when going out for education, work or other activities. Recipients said the portable alarm provides extra security during travel or outside work.
