A 12-year-old boy died after a crocodile pulled him into a river in Uttar Pradesh’s Bahraich district as his uncle stood by unable to help, according to police. The body was found hours later.
The event occurred on Tuesday when the boy had joined his uncle, Udayraj Singh, at their farm field close to the Ghaghra River.
At the location, the child went to the riverbank to relieve himself when a crocodile that was hidden attacked.
Upon hearing the boy’s shouts, the uncle ran over to save him and attempted to free him from the animal. The crocodile proved stronger, however, and pulled the boy into the river before vanishing underwater.
After word of the attack spread, local residents arrived at the scene as police and staff from the Bahraich Forest Division began a search.
Authorities used nets to try to find the child, but early attempts failed.
The body was recovered in the evening, police said.
The event has raised worries among people living along the Ghaghra River, where crocodile sightings and attacks have occurred before.
