Protests erupted in Jammu’s Doda district on Friday after a local man died during an alleged clash with police, leading authorities to suspend mobile internet in the area. Residents described the victim as an innocent auto driver, while police said he was stopped at a checkpoint amid suspected cattle smuggling. The deceased, identified as Arif Hussain, 30, from Cheeka village near Bhaderwah, was reportedly shot by Special Operation Group personnel after an altercation at Jai on Thursday night. Locals claimed his companion was also assaulted. Police stated that officers had set up a checkpost following tips about smugglers. Around 11:30 pm, two individuals allegedly attacked the team and tried to seize a weapon, which discharged and wounded Hussain. Three officers were hurt and taken to hospital, where Hussain was declared dead. Following the news, residents protested in Bhaderwah, and a local group called for a shutdown. Authorities detained one person and suspended mobile services in Doda on Friday. The body was released to the family after post-mortem and taken to Bhalla amid further demonstrations. Officials have not issued a formal statement. The situation later eased in most parts of the district, with security forces stationed at sensitive locations.
