SBI Fund Management Ltd., the country’s biggest asset manager, began trading at a 6% premium to its issue price, with plans to lead the mutual fund sector by leveraging the parent bank’s wide distribution network. Shares opened at 613 rupees, up from the 574-rupee offer price, before closing 0.6% lower at 610 rupees on July 21, 2026. Managing director Debasish Mishra told reporters after the listing ceremony for the 9,813-crore-rupee IPO that only about 100 million of India’s 1.4 billion people currently hold investment portfolios. The firm aims to add another 100 million investors within five years. Of SBI’s roughly 530 million customers, just 550,000 currently hold its mutual fund products, leaving substantial room for growth through cross-selling. Finance Minister warnings about banks focusing on lending and avoiding mis-selling were addressed by SBI chairperson Challa Sreenivasulu Setty, who noted low product penetration among customers and said the bank would offer only subsidiary products. SBI also intends to grow its wealth management arm to 1.4 million clients by 2030. Limited numbers of fund managers remain the main constraint, and the company plans to strengthen its team.
