The political environment in Punjab has grown more complex following the resignation of three Aam Aadmi Party legislators who have aligned with the Bharatiya Janata Party. This development has prompted renewed discussion about the stability of the state administration led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
The three former AAP members, representing constituencies in Samana, Sanaur and Amritsar North, formally joined the BJP in the national capital. They cited ongoing concerns regarding the management of drug-related issues, increasing public debt and unaddressed commitments made during previous election cycles. One of the legislators, a former police officer, stated that the party had lost significant ground in the state.
Criticism has intensified around the October killing of an anti-drug campaigner in Mansa district. The incident occurred while the individual was recording a live video inside a medical store, leading to widespread calls for accountability. The case has since been transferred to a central investigative agency following requests from the family and opposition groups.
Opposition figures from the Congress party have suggested that additional departures from the ruling party may occur. They have also questioned the extent of direct oversight exercised by the Chief Minister, alleging that key decisions originate from party leaders outside the state.
Leaders from the Shiromani Akali Dal have held the state government responsible for a perceived decline in public safety. They pointed to the temporary status of the top police official and argued that insufficient attention has been given to maintaining order.
Earlier allegations regarding the Chief Minister’s conduct during assembly proceedings have resurfaced. Opposition members had previously demanded medical testing after claiming signs of impairment were visible, though the matter was not resolved through formal procedures.
The BJP has increased its focus on the state’s approach to narcotics control and overall security. With the next assembly elections scheduled for 2027, these events have heightened competition among major political groups in Punjab.
The defections and related controversies have placed additional pressure on the ruling party to address public concerns over governance and law enforcement. Observers note that the coming months will be critical in determining how these issues influence voter sentiment ahead of the polls.
