Amnesty International has called on Pakistani officials to allow former Prime Minister Imran Khan contact with relatives, attorneys and medical staff after three years in detention. The group issued a statement demanding unrestricted legal visits, family meetings and proper healthcare. It also sought an end to what it termed unlawful solitary confinement. Regional director Isabelle Lassee stated that Khan had been denied a fair trial and held in extended isolation. Reports indicated he had not seen family for over eight months and that his vision had worsened. Similar limits were said to affect meetings with lawyers since late 2025. Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, echoed the claims of prolonged isolation. Aide Sayed Zulfikar Bukhari called the conditions troubling and insisted on fair trials and standard prisoner rights. He noted Khan’s continued popularity and support among many Pakistanis. Amnesty further asked authorities to safeguard peaceful protest rights ahead of planned demonstrations. Health worries have grown after a diagnosis of a blocked retinal vein in one eye. Treatment delays reportedly reduced vision sharply before specialist care was given. Official doctors later said five injections from January to June improved the condition. Khan’s relatives have sought independent assessments by his own physicians. He has been held since August 2023 following legal cases after his ouster. Acquitted in several matters, he is serving a 14-year term for corruption. Separate convictions with Bushra Bibi in a gifts case from December 2025 are under appeal. Khan denies all charges, calling them politically driven. A United Nations group previously deemed the detention arbitrary. Another expert raised concerns over months of near-total isolation under surveillance. Pakistani authorities have rejected mistreatment claims and provided court evidence of facilities and visits. Khan remains a leading opposition voice, with analysts noting his imprisonment has bolstered backing among younger citizens.
