Australia has supported a new robotics laboratory at a government school in New Delhi. This forms part of expanding education efforts linking the two nations beyond university ties and student exchange programs.

Australia’s Deputy High Commissioner to India, Nick McCaffrey, opened the Robotics STEM Lab at Rao Balram Public School in Najafgarh on Delhi’s outskirts. He called the project an investment in future innovators.

The laboratory resulted from Australian funding in collaboration with the India STEM Foundation, a nonprofit focused on broadening science, technology, engineering and mathematics access across India. The Delhi facility supports the foundation’s goal of making STEM education widely available through free innovation kits for practical learning in robotics and coding.

A STEM Innovation Kit contains hardware parts enabling students to create and test robotic and electronic projects. Typical items include Arduino microcontrollers, various sensors, motors, breadboards and wires. The approach emphasizes hands-on assembly and coding to develop problem-solving abilities and technical skills.

The foundation directs resources toward schools lacking prior STEM facilities, favoring government and lower-resourced institutions. The program aligns with India’s National Education Policy 2020, which promotes critical thinking, creativity and technology-based learning.

This effort occurs amid wider activity in Indian government schools. Recent partnerships in Delhi and new AI and robotics labs in Karnataka reflect a national push for classroom STEM infrastructure.

The robotics lab adds to growing India-Australia education and technology cooperation this year, complementing university and national-level projects by providing direct equipment access at a single public school.
