A video shared online showed an anti-immigration protest in Brighton being turned back by a larger group of counter-demonstrators on June 13.
Around 300 people took part in a Stop The Boats event arranged by South East Patriots. Roughly 4,000 attended a counter-rally organised by Carnival Against Fascism.
The footage captured the smaller group attempting to march before residents blocked their path and forced them to retreat.
Online comments praised the solidarity displayed by locals. Viewers described the scene as evidence of community strength and expressed pride in the city’s inclusive character.
Sussex Police confirmed eight arrests for offences including assault on officers, breach of the peace, possession of a pyrotechnic and public order violations. Riot police responded after objects were thrown near Brighton station.
Chief Superintendent Adam Hays noted the disruption around the station and surrounding roads. He said officers must balance the rights of protest groups with public safety.
City leader Bella Sankey had warned beforehand that far-right agitators were attempting to sow division in the diverse city.
A Home Office spokesperson said the government continues to tackle illegal small boat crossings and people smuggling, noting recent returns of migrants and criminals.
