An Indian resident in the UK described how the country was ill-prepared for recent high temperatures and why conditions there differ from those in India. The man, identified as Sharma, noted that his recently purchased car had no air conditioning and that none could be added due to lack of space in the engine compartment. He said friends in New Delhi found it amusing when he mentioned difficulties at 33 degrees Celsius, since temperatures in the capital often exceed 45 degrees. However, he pointed out that homes and vehicles in the UK typically lack fans or cooling systems, making the heat feel more intense. Sharma explained that he had not used the cooling feature for the first two months after buying the car. When he tried to activate it during warmer weather, it failed to work. A mechanic later informed him that the vehicle had been manufactured without air conditioning. He expressed surprise, noting that even older models in India included the feature. The mechanic confirmed that certain UK cars from specific years came only with heaters and fans. Sharma added that retrofitting was impossible because of insufficient space under the bonnet. On June 26, the Met Office recorded a provisional high of 37.3C in Santon Downham, Suffolk, marking the hottest June day on record. An amber heat warning remained in effect for parts of southeast England and East Anglia through Saturday evening. Forecasters said the following week would bring variable conditions with periods of cloud, sun, and rain.
