An Indian-origin businessman who planned to open a grocery store in a former building he bought in Belfast has lost everything after the structure was deliberately set on fire. The arson occurred early Saturday at the former Gospel Hall on Shankill Road. The owner, who purchased the property last year and was preparing it for an Indian supermarket, said he had not anticipated such hostility after living in Ireland for 18 years. He noted that his entire life savings were invested without insurance due to ongoing electrical work. Police have confirmed the fire was started intentionally on the roof. The businessman, who spoke anonymously to the BBC, reported that onlookers appeared to celebrate the destruction. He described the incident as a racist hate crime, citing aggressive reactions from locals in recent weeks. He said the location was chosen simply because the building was for sale, not for any specific area connection. Emotionally, financially and mentally drained, he expressed fear for his safety and uncertainty about supporting his family.
