Professor Swaran Singh, an Indian-origin psychiatrist and academic, has been nominated for a life peerage and a seat in the House of Lords. The appointment is part of a new list of political honours announced before Prime Minister Keir Starmer leaves office next week, according to PTI. Singh, who serves as Professor of Social and Community Psychiatry at the University of Warwick and as a consultant psychiatrist with the Coventry and Warwickshire Partnership NHS Trust, is one of three nominees put forward by the Conservative Party. The peerages will be formally granted by King Charles III after the resignation honours process. Singh previously led an independent inquiry into discrimination in the Conservative Party, known as the Singh Investigation, and served as a commissioner at the Equality and Human Rights Commission. He trained as a surgeon in New Delhi before moving into psychiatry and relocated to the UK in 1991. His research focuses on ethnicity and mental health, and he directs the university’s Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing Research. London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan and human rights lawyer Parvais Jabbar are also among the nominees. The 26 appointments form a cross-party list prepared before Starmer announced his resignation as Labour leader. Starmer will meet the King on Monday to resign, after which Andy Burnham is expected to succeed him.
