King Charles III has become the first British monarch to release details of his personal tax payments, showing he paid 12.9 million pounds for 2024-2025. This amount ranks him among the United Kingdom’s highest taxpayers based on the yearly royal financial reports. The move represents a new level of openness from the monarchy, as the King and other senior members have chosen to share their tax details voluntarily. Prince William paid 7.76 million pounds in tax during the same timeframe according to the reports. Buckingham Palace stated the release aims to boost transparency and improve public insight into royal accountability. Since 2022 the King and Prince of Wales have together paid over 50 million pounds in tax. The figures lack details on calculation methods such as the division between income tax and capital gains tax. Tax expert Dan Neidle described the information as quite unclear. He noted on BBC Radio 4 that it remains unknown how much comes from capital gains versus income tax and what expenses were subtracted to reach the taxable amount. The King earns from the Duchy of Lancaster estate which produced 25.2 million pounds in the latest year along with private properties like Balmoral and Sandringham plus investments. Prince William draws income from the Duchy of Cornwall a large hereditary property covering official duties staff and family costs. His private secretary explained that tax applies at the top rate on any remaining surplus after audited expenses. The accounts confirm the King and Queen will stay at Clarence House instead of relocating to Buckingham Palace to allow more public access during renovations. The Sovereign Grant reached 86.3 million pounds last year with 34.5 million allocated to palace repairs. Total royal travel included over 733000 pounds for 177 helicopter flights. The grant is projected to approach 100 million pounds by 2027-2028 before declining after work finishes. Funding depends on Crown Estate profits which dropped to 1.2 billion pounds. Other costs covered state visits and a royal train trip. Prince William has ended a 1.5 million pound annual rent arrangement tied to Dartmoor Prison directing the money to local projects instead. Critics and historians have noted increased focus on royal finances and calls for greater accountability.
