Saudi Arabia plans to introduce a new men’s T20 cricket competition in 2026 amid regional tensions connected to the Iran conflict. The Dunes T20 League is scheduled to start in the second week of October and represents the country’s first official entry into professional franchise cricket.
The six-team event was arranged through a partnership involving the Saudi Arabian Cricket Federation, entertainment firm SAN Ltd, and sports agencies Unique Sports Group and Prolithic Talent Agency. The tournament operates independently of Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, even as the nation has increased its cricket activities in recent years.
Saudi Arabia hosted the Indian Premier League auction in the past, and a collaboration with the UAE’s ILT20 was agreed in 2025. Aramco, the Saudi oil company, also serves as a major sponsor of the International Cricket Council.
Reports indicate the Dunes T20 is seen as an initial move toward developing a larger Saudi-supported franchise league that could draw top international players. English cricketers such as Alex Hales, Jason Roy, James Vince and Moeen Ali are among those expected to receive invitations. Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has been named league ambassador.
Singh stated he looks forward to supporting the league at a time of growing interest in cricket within Saudi Arabia. He noted the competition’s aim to expand the sport in a new market, offer chances to local players, and deliver an authentic experience for fans.
Organisers said the event seeks to speed up cricket’s development in Saudi Arabia, create opportunities for emerging local talent, and attract worldwide audiences. The league will run from the second week of October 2026 and is described as an important step for the sport in the kingdom.
The partnership combines SAN Ltd’s commercial and operational skills with Unique Sports Group’s management expertise and Prolithic Talent Agency’s work in athlete representation. A SAN Ltd spokesperson called the agreement a key moment for cricket’s growth in the country.
The launch occurs despite security concerns in the Middle East. A planned women’s event was postponed to 2027 due to issues linked to the Iran conflict. Players contacted about the Dunes T20 have reportedly indicated willingness to travel if tensions remain stable. Saudi Arabia’s men’s national team currently ranks 32nd in the ICC T20 standings.
