Sunny Deol returns to the Partition period with Batwara 1947, a historical drama that examines the human impact of one of South Asia’s pivotal events. The story is set in Lahore during the 1947 upheaval and follows Sikander Mirza along with his Muslim family after they depart Lucknow and become refugees in the newly divided Punjab. Their experiences highlight displacement, family bonds, identity and the challenge of establishing a home following the redrawing of borders between India and Pakistan. The film is co-written and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan. It also features Preity Zinta’s return to acting after an eight-year break. Theatrical release is planned for August 14, 2026, aligning with India’s Independence Day weekend. In an interview, Deol stated that he had long wished to tell this story because of his attachment to its subject. Although fictional, the narrative explores the emotions of a family caught in sudden change. He noted that efforts to produce the project began around 2010 but advanced after the success of Gadar 2, leading to collaboration with Aamir Khan. Rather than focusing only on political aspects, the film centers on how ordinary people faced unexpected disruption. Adapted from a play, it emphasizes a family’s journey and the rapid transformation of their social environment. Deol highlighted the sudden difficulties that arise when circumstances shift within weeks or months. He also pointed to the central role of family, particularly the bond with a mother. The production reunites Deol with Preity Zinta, whose energetic presence contributes to the emotional tone. Deol hopes the film will encourage younger viewers to learn more about Partition beyond general knowledge.
