The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association has noted that the restriction is precautionary. A new rule on gel nail items took effect in the UK, prompting salons to phase out products with TPO. The measure focuses on trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide, known as TPO, an ingredient that aids hardening under UV or LED lights. From August 15, 2026, makers and importers cannot introduce cosmetics with TPO to the UK market. Gel manicures themselves remain available. Salons may use current TPO products until February 14, 2027, after which they cannot buy more from suppliers. This matters for clients who get regular gel or BIAB treatments. The European Union began its TPO ban in cosmetics on September 1, 2025, following classification as a possible reproductive hazard. TPO acts as a photoinitiator that cures gel under light and has been common in such systems. The rule stems from the chemical’s properties in extreme exposure scenarios, not from proof of fertility issues in typical salon use. Caroline Rainsford of the CTPA explained the ban addresses hazardous traits under worst-case conditions with high exposure. The group stressed the step is preventive and does not indicate that properly used products are unsafe. TPO levels in nail items are very small and applied only to nails. A 2014 EU safety review found TPO acceptable in nail products up to 5 percent concentration, though it noted moderate skin sensitisation risk. Replacements such as TPO-L and BAPO now appear in formulations. Shoppers can check labels for the ingredient under its full name or variants. Podiatrist Margaret Dabbs advised professional removal, breaks between sessions, and daily nail care to limit harm. She noted that even two weeks between visits helps, along with hydration. Gel and BIAB work can thin nails via buffing, acetone, and scraping that remove oils and damage layers, leading to dryness and peeling. UK product safety rules require cosmetics to meet standards on ingredients, assessments, and labelling.
