Several US states have declared August 15, 2026, as India Day to honor the Indian-American community and mark India’s upcoming 80th Independence Day. Delaware Governor Matthew Meyer issued the proclamation, noting the state’s expanding Indian-American population and its role in local social and economic activities. The move was announced by the Consulate General of India in New York on August 13. The document emphasizes how Delaware benefits from various cultures, including Indian traditions, and credits residents of Indian origin with advancing the state’s prosperity through their professional and civic efforts. It also mentions India’s range of languages, customs and beliefs, which Indian Americans continue to uphold while contributing to American society. The observance aims to celebrate India’s independence, recognize community achievements and strengthen links between Delaware and India. Similar proclamations were made earlier by New York and New Jersey. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill highlighted Indian-American involvement in education, healthcare, technology and public service. New York Governor Kathy Hochul acknowledged the community’s impact on cultural and economic life as well as shared democratic values. Across the United States, Indian Independence Day is observed with flag raisings, parades and cultural events organized by diplomatic missions and local groups. Landmarks have previously been lit in Indian colors for the occasion. The recognitions coincide with preparations for India’s 80th Independence Day, which will also mark 150 years of the song Vande Mataram and focus on youth participation.
