Why are people wrapping aluminum foil around doorknobs? It offers a simple, practical way to prevent damage to household hardware.

How does wrapping aluminum foil around door handles help?

How to do it properly?

This trick can also be used beyond just painting.

Kitchen drawers worldwide often store rolls of aluminum foil long after leftovers are gone. It serves as a useful household alternative, not only for food but for small problems during daily chores. Anyone who has painted a door or had a house whitewashed knows the process. Edges get taped, a drop cloth is placed, and painting begins, only to reveal paint on the doorknob. Cleaning dried paint from metal or brass hardware is tedious and potentially damaging.

A simple piece of foil solves this. Wrapping door handles in aluminum foil before painting shields the surface from splashes and drips. After the job, the foil peels off, leaving hardware untouched. Painter’s tape often fails on rounded or irregular shapes, but foil bends and clings where tape cannot seal properly.

The method takes under a minute. Tear off foil large enough to cover the handle and exposed hardware, then wrap it tightly by hand to fit every curve and edge. Press overlapping sections to block paint seepage. Once dry, remove and discard the foil, leaving the handle clean without scrubbing or scratches.

Beyond painting, it serves as a temporary shield during household moves when handles face bumps, dust, or scrapes.
