The Nilgiris region, known for its hills, mist and clouds forming a striking landscape, has inspired many writers. A group of readers from the Coonoor Book Club has now added to that tradition with a new anthology. The collection of short stories, poems and essays, titled Tall Tales & Short Stories and published by Ukiyoto, was edited by former journalists Nimi Kurian, Nina Varghese and Theresa Varghese. It includes contributions from 13 local writers.
The pieces reflect local elements such as tea estates, forest paths, grasslands, social gatherings, the Toy Train and neighborhood stories. The project began during a club meeting. Nimi Kurian noted that she and her sister Nina launched the group two years ago to bring readers together. Members choose books, meet at homes and share views, with past selections including works by Perumal Murugan and Abraham Verghese.
One meeting led to the idea of writing about the Nilgiris. Although most contributors were new to writing, they completed their pieces. Nimi Kurian’s story about a dinner party is described as humorous, and she also contributed a ghost story set in an old bungalow. Other entries include verses by Johnny John and an essay by Shernaz Sethna about adjusting to life in Coonoor.
The stories were written last year, with editing and design completed over several months. Nimi Kurian, who returned to the area after years away, said settling back felt natural. Nina Varghese called the process rewarding and mentioned plans for a sequel focused on Coonoor. The book is available online.
