In a time when artificial intelligence handles coding, answers questions and translates speech rapidly, some of the world’s most prominent families are choosing a different priority. Rather than emphasizing only technical skills, parents including Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg, Tesla and SpaceX leader Elon Musk, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and relatives of former US President Donald Trump are supporting their children’s study of Mandarin. Mandarin is spoken by about 1.18 billion people, making it the most widely used language globally. With China’s growing influence in manufacturing, technology and trade, educators and executives see fluency as opening doors beyond basic communication. Zuckerberg, who started learning the language in 2010 to connect with his wife’s family, has spoken it publicly in China. Reports indicate his daughters are also studying it to gain early exposure to the language and culture. Musk stated that his son is learning Mandarin, consistent with the company’s major operations in China. Arabella Kushner, daughter of Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, began lessons at 18 months and later greeted Chinese officials in the language. Bezos and his former wife introduced their children to Mandarin lessons alongside other global education programs. Experts note that China’s status as the second-largest economy makes the language a practical asset for future business and technology roles. Academics add that language study builds cultural understanding and personal connections that automated translation cannot replicate. The trend illustrates that skills such as communication and cultural awareness may hold increasing value alongside technical knowledge.
