A retrospective exhibition marking five decades of work by an artist opened Tuesday at a Kolkata gallery. Called In Bloom, the show traces the creator’s practice across fifty years and gathers a wide selection of paintings, drawings and sculptures.

The artist is known for expressive depictions of women and emotionally resonant visual stories. Themes of identity, memory, resilience and change run through the body of work.

Motifs such as flowers, birds, animals and decorative designs drawn from folk and indigenous sources appear throughout, illustrating a layered view of the world shaped by personal and shared experience.

At the preview held at the Kolkata Centre for Creativity with Gallery Sanskriti, the artist described the exhibition as part of an ongoing creative path rather than a conclusion.

“I have never aimed for a fixed destination. Each piece responds to life as I have seen, felt and pictured it. In Bloom lets me review these fifty years not as an ending but as continued growth. I hope visitors see their own feelings reflected in the works,” the artist said.

Richa Agarwal, chair of the centre and chief executive of Emami Art, noted that the practice has stayed meaningful across generations.

“We are pleased to honour this remarkable journey of five decades. The distinctive visual language has examined identity and memory with depth and quiet grace. We hope the show gives visitors a chance to appreciate the full range and lasting relevance of the work,” she said.

The exhibition runs until July 24.
