Households across Great Britain are increasingly adopting eco-friendly energy solutions to manage rising bills, amid surging global oil and gas prices triggered by the Iran conflict, according to information from prominent energy companies. Statistics reveal a significant uptick in interest for solar installations, electric cars, and heat pumps since the conflict started on February 28, as residents prepare for higher utility charges under the upcoming energy price adjustment in summer. Utility costs are projected to climb by 18% starting in July, reaching an average of £1,929 annually for standard combined electricity and gas plans, following a roughly 50% increase in Europe’s key gas benchmark. Octopus Energy, the largest supplier in Great Britain, reported to the Guardian that orders for heat pumps more than doubled in March from the previous month, solar system sales grew by nearly 80%, and new electric vehicle leases increased by over 85%. British Gas, the second-largest provider, observed a 250% surge in inquiries for solar panel setups since February 28, along with a notable rise in interest for heat pumps, according to a representative. Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, chief product officer at Octopus, stated that UK families are frustrated with dependence on volatile international fossil fuel markets and are proactively choosing solar, heat pumps, and electric vehicles to secure affordable operating expenses and insulate against future price fluctuations. One such customer, Allan Burgess from Great Yarmouth, opted to install a heat pump last month instead of continuing with heating oil, which serves over a million UK homes for heating and hot water, particularly in off-grid rural locations. He explained that the onset of the Iran conflict prompted his decision, as the price for 500 liters of heating oil jumped from £250 to £700 within days, raising concerns about potential further increases amid low supplies. Unlike regulated gas, heating oil prices are uncapped by Ofgem, leading to complaints of rapid cost escalations and availability issues since the conflict began. These prices track jet fuel costs, which have risen sharply due to Iran’s effective blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. The UK, heavily reliant on Gulf imports for about 60% of its jet fuel, faces heightened shortage risks. Burgess noted his urgency to adopt a heat pump for protection, especially given his wife’s disability, which made any heating interruption unacceptable. He scheduled the installation on March 12, with a site assessment two days later and completion by March 17. Benefiting from an existing water tank and a £7,500 government subsidy, the total cost was £1,500. His setup, including solar panels and a battery, now powers the heat pump independently of the grid. Furbnow, a specialist in home energy improvements, reported a 42% rise in inquiries since late February, with many focusing on reducing fossil fuel dependency. Chief executive Becky Lane described these choices as thoughtful strategies, emphasizing that minimizing a home’s energy needs offers the best defense against price volatility. Nearly three-quarters of potential clients inquired about solar panels, over half about replacing gas or oil boilers with electric heat pumps, and about 40% sought insulation upgrade estimates.
