Opposition figures including Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal have criticized the E20 policy, claiming it damages vehicles and is being imposed by the government. Kejriwal suggested that India has submitted to demands from U.S. President Donald Trump to purchase ethanol from America.

The administration aimed to generate 10-11 billion liters of ethanol, enabling 20% of petrol in transport to be replaced by domestically produced ethanol, keeping funds within India instead of spending on oil imports. Due to this initiative, India’s distillery capacity has expanded to 18-20 billion liters across about 500 facilities. For the current ethanol year from November to October, oil firms have agreed to buy around 10.5 billion liters.
