India has described recent discussions with the United States as reassuring, including talks on a proposed measure that would impose 100 percent tariffs on nations importing large volumes of Russian oil. A senior government official spoke on condition of anonymity. The US Senate passed the measure earlier this week. It targets India and four other countries under its criteria if enacted into law. The bill still requires introduction and approval in the House of Representatives. The official noted ongoing engagement with the US on a trade agreement and stated that conversations regarding the sanctions legislation have been positive. India currently faces a 10 percent tariff on 55 percent of its exports to the US following an investigation into forced labor practices. A separate probe into excess production capacity could lead to additional duties. Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal confirmed continued talks on the trade deal, noting both sides remain committed to the February 2026 agreement and its joint statement on preferential market access in key sectors.
