India’s outbound shipments increased 19.63 percent from a year earlier to reach $44.24 billion in July. A quicker climb in inbound shipments widened the monthly trade shortfall to $31.98 billion from $27.88 billion in the prior year, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agarwal stated during a data briefing. Imports advanced 17.52 percent to $76.22 billion. Over the April-July period, exports grew 17.04 percent to $173.78 billion while imports rose 19.27 percent to $292.38 billion. Agarwal linked stronger shipments abroad to gains in petroleum products, electronics, engineering items and marine goods. Exports to West Asian nations climbed 8.62 percent to $5.7 billion. The larger deficit highlights faster growth in energy and commodity purchases, which may pressure the current account and currency if the pattern continues.
