Congo’s rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak has claimed more than 2,300 lives, marking it as the deadliest such event recorded in the Central African country. The situation in one of the nation’s most fragile areas represents the quickest expanding Ebola event ever, with 4,945 confirmed cases and 2,325 fatalities based on official figures issued early Monday. This marks Congo’s 17th Ebola event and its largest to date, exceeding the previous record from 2018-2020 that saw 2,299 deaths among 3,481 cases. Recent updates indicate 101 additional cases and 33 deaths in the last day. Over 1,000 individuals have recovered, though 730 remain under hospital care or isolation. The current strain is spreading faster and affecting more people than prior outbreaks. The World Health Organization noted it could exceed the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic, which caused over 11,000 deaths. No approved vaccines or therapies exist for the Bundibugyo virus driving this event across six eastern provinces. Research trials continue in Ituri, the main affected area. Most recent infections occur outside monitored groups. Additional issues involve strikes by unpaid medical staff, threats from armed groups, community distrust, hard-to-access zones with poor infrastructure, and false claims denying the disease’s existence. The WHO stated the outbreak continues at an exceptional rate beyond tracking efforts, with a weekly peak of 579 cases and 304 deaths. The agency indicated major expansion of response measures is in progress. On Friday, UN humanitarian leader Tom Fletcher allocated another 30.5 million dollars and sent 20 extra personnel to support frontline efforts, calling for faster and broader international action.
