The situation so far: An Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has become the deadliest in the nation’s history, with deaths surpassing 2,300 as of August 18, 2026. The World Health Organization reports the event is likely to exceed the 2014-16 West Africa epidemic, which recorded over 28,616 cases and 11,325 deaths. Strife in the DRC complicates efforts to halt the disease. The nation has logged more than 2,325 fatalities, topping the prior outbreak’s 2,299 deaths, with a fatality rate near 47 percent. Confirmed cases reached 4,945, including 101 new ones in the last day. About 1,040 people have recovered, while 730 remain in hospital or isolation. This marks the 17th such outbreak in the country and has reached a sixth province after a death in Bas-Uele. Ituri bears the heaviest load, but cases also appear in North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele and Tshopo. The WHO declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern three months ago. The current strain is the rare Bundibugyo variant, which lacks approved vaccines or treatments. Officials must rely on case detection to limit spread. Rebel conflict, weak health monitoring, distrust of officials, traditional burial customs involving body contact, and misinformation have hindered control. A recent strike by health workers over unpaid wages, plus attacks on staff by rebels and crowds, has worsened conditions. The WHO stated the outbreak is outpacing response efforts. Experts highlight the need for rapid detection and contact tracing, noting many cases are found late. Genetic data indicate the virus circulated since February, though declared in May. The WHO Director-General expressed concern over deaths occurring outside treatment centers. The organization works with local teams to boost surveillance and expand treatment sites. Trials for treatments are underway, and vaccine development continues. The UN humanitarian chief allocated an extra $30.5 million and 20 more staff. Sustained diagnostic improvements and regional genomic monitoring are urged.
