An 82-year-old resident of east Bengaluru lost ₹3.49 lakh after fraudsters posing as Election Commission officials contacted him about completing a Special Intensive Revision form for voter lists. The man, from Rustum Bagh, received a call claiming his verification was incomplete. The caller directed him to download a fraudulent app after a failed ₹5 payment and later sent a QR code via messaging. This allowed access to his phone and banking details, leading to unauthorized credit card transactions. He reported the incident to local police and the national cybercrime helpline. Authorities in Cyberabad and cybersecurity experts have issued warnings about similar schemes, noting that scammers request personal data, payments or app downloads under the guise of official verification. They stress that genuine processes occur only through government websites and no fees or third-party links are involved. Advice includes avoiding unknown callers, suspicious links and sharing of information.
