Bharatiya Janata Party Bihar unit chief Sanjay Saraogi stated on Wednesday that the Emergency declared on June 25, 1975, stands as the darkest period in Indian democratic history. He described the move by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi as an improper use of Article 352, which led to the suspension of basic rights and curbs on democratic processes.
Saraogi noted that media restrictions, detentions of political figures, and centralised control created widespread fear across the country. He highlighted that Bihar saw the most structured opposition to the Emergency.
Under the guidance of Jayaprakash Narayan, the Total Revolution campaign sparked public awareness and reshaped political discourse nationwide. From Patna to remote areas, students, young people, and activists joined efforts against authoritarian measures, strengthening democratic voices throughout India, he told reporters in Patna.
The BJP leader mentioned that several prominent figures and party workers contributed significantly to the resistance. He said George Fernandes coordinated activities while in hiding, and Karpoori Thakur stayed involved in defending democratic principles.
Thousands of workers from the Jana Sangh and RSS faced jail terms and difficulties but stayed committed to democratic ideals. When many opposition figures were detained, members of the RSS, Jana Sangh, and ABVP worked covertly to keep democratic activities alive across the nation, Saraogi added.
He stated that the BJP carries forward the democratic legacy born from the anti-Emergency efforts. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the party continues to uphold constitutional values and citizen rights, he said.
Saraogi recalled that Bihar voters delivered a strong verdict in the 1977 elections against authoritarian rule and helped restore democratic governance. The memory of that movement still motivates party members and citizens committed to democracy, he noted.
He asked people to remember the Emergency period and inform younger generations about the efforts made to defend India’s democratic system. Saraogi called on citizens to renew their dedication to democratic principles, constitutional rule, and national priorities so that democracy endures for future generations.
