Ceasefire discussions between the United States and Iran, taking place in Pakistan, encountered initial setbacks due to disagreements and preliminary demands, raising doubts about the process’s viability. US President Donald Trump confirmed that the negotiations, which were postponed by more than five hours, are now officially in progress.
In comments to the US media outlet NewsNation.com, Trump adopted a cautious stance, stating he is unsure about the outcome of the talks. He indicated he would evaluate Iran’s sincerity quickly and mentioned that the Strait of Hormuz is expected to reopen shortly, with other shipping options becoming available.
Describing Iran as a nation in decline, Trump cautioned that should diplomatic efforts fail, the US is ready to adopt a different strategy, implying a more stringent approach if required.
‘The Strait of Hormuz will reopen soon. Iran is a struggling country, but alternatives to using the strait are becoming apparent,’ Trump responded to a query.
Prior to Trump’s update on the commencement of talks, the American team, headed by Vice President JD Vance and Jared Kushner, had not engaged in face-to-face meetings with Iranian representatives despite arriving in Islamabad five hours earlier.
Significant mistrust and specific requirements from both sides contributed to the unnecessary holdup. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, speaking with his German counterpart, noted that Tehran is approaching the negotiations without confidence, which adds further challenges to resolving the six-week conflict.
