The central government informed the Delhi High Court on Thursday that it would arrange any necessary medical help for activist Sonam Wangchuk, who is on the 19th day of his open-ended fast at Jantar Mantar, following recommendations from doctors tracking his condition. The assurance came during a hearing on a petition that sought immediate medical support amid reports of his weakening health.
A Division Bench led by Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia ordered the Centre to arrange daily health checks by government doctors and to act promptly on their findings. The bench noted that every citizen’s life holds value.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that official doctors were already monitoring the activist and that any required treatment would be given as per medical guidance.
The bench welcomed the assurance and directed daily clinical checks along with prompt medical steps when needed before closing the petition.
The case arose from a public interest petition by advocate Rakesh Kumar Saini asking the Centre and Delhi government to safeguard the activist’s health, including possible hospital transfer and liquid nutrition if required.
Wangchuk began the fast on June 28 at Jantar Mantar, calling for the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over alleged NEET irregularities.
Physician Satish Lamba reported that the activist’s weight had fallen to 56.65 kg, down 500 grams in the previous day and more than 9 kg since the fast started. His blood pressure stood at 105/61 mmHg, blood sugar at 80 mg/dL and oxygen level at 97 percent.
