The Delhi High Court directed on Tuesday that climate activist Sonam Wangchuk be transferred without delay to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. Wangchuk had been moved to Safdarjung Hospital after ending a 20-day hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.

This order responded to a petition by his wife, Gitanjali J Angmo, who requested the move due to concerns over his health condition after the extended protest.

The court specified that Wangchuk would receive care from a team of physicians at the private facility. All medical records from Safdarjung Hospital are to be forwarded to Medanta.

Judges noted that treatment details and reports would be shared. A panel of doctors at Medanta is to be formed for his care, with a full ruling anticipated later.

This represents a shift from the court’s prior position supporting treatment at the government hospital.

Wangchuk’s wife expressed gratitude on social media for the decision.

The government raised no objections to the transfer but requested assurances against discharge contrary to medical advice, citing risks if he resumed protests.

The court found agreement among physicians on the need for ongoing monitoring, which could occur at various facilities, though one specialist advised hospital oversight.
