Billionaires Michael and Susan Dell have pledged $750 million to the University of Texas at Austin to build an advanced healthcare facility designed to enhance patient care using artificial intelligence.

The planned UT Dell Medical Center, set to open in 2030, will anchor a new research campus spanning more than 300 acres, according to an Associated Press report.

Construction is scheduled to begin this fall on what university officials describe as the country’s first “AI-native” hospital, with artificial intelligence integrated into its foundational systems from the outset.

At many hospitals, AI tools are added to existing infrastructure. Dr. Claudia Lucchinetti, Dean of Dell Medical School, noted that the new center offers a chance to embed these technologies from the beginning.

Key features include ambient AI systems that handle clinical notes and environmental monitoring, allowing staff more time for direct patient interaction. Predictive analytics will detect early biometric signs of diseases such as cancer. Part of the donation will support a major supercomputer at the Texas Advanced Computing Center. The facility will also partner with the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.

The aim is to shift from reactive care to proactive, coordinated treatment plans. Michael Dell, a UT-Austin alumnus, cited personal ties to Texas and the need for updated health infrastructure amid regional growth. The gift marks the first time donors have given over $1 billion to the University of Texas system.
