The DMK leadership is considering an expansion of its district units to more than 100 as part of efforts to restructure the party. The move would include naming secretaries for the additional units. The party currently maintains 78 district units.
Officials aim to assign greater responsibilities to younger leaders and may set an age limit for district secretaries. They are also likely to introduce fixed terms for these positions to avoid long-term individual control over local structures.
Sources indicated that a committee appointed by party president M.K. Stalin to review the organization and bring new energy has delivered its interim report. The executive committee is set to convene on August 22 to examine the proposals.
Any accepted recommendations would need to be added to the party constitution before taking effect, according to sources.
The committee includes former ministers Thangam Thennarasu, Geetha Jeevan, R. Sakkarapani, S.S. Sivasankar, and Tamilarasi Ravikumar, along with MP Murasoli, former MP M.M. Abdullah, former MLAs I. Paranthaman and Dr. Ezhilan, and party functionary S.K.P. Karuna.
One suggestion focuses on adding younger members and women as district secretaries to improve representation and effectiveness across the organization.
