Former Iranian president Mohammad Khatami has urged a careful diplomatic strategy with the United States and Israel. He cautioned that Iran cannot maintain normal conditions during an extended conflict, even though it has endured outside pressures. Khatami noted that the Islamic Republic has shown resilience against foreign threats but stressed that ongoing hostilities would create major difficulties for citizens and governance. He stated that while trust in the United States is low and Israel seeks to heighten tensions, these issues require prudent negotiation. Khatami emphasized that daily life, public needs, and societal management cannot continue under wartime circumstances. His statements highlight economic and social strains from sustained military standoffs. Khatami rejected claims that external military action could topple Iran’s political system, asserting it will endure despite internal flaws. He warned instead that unaddressed domestic grievances could erode public backing. His remarks occur as divisions within Iranian leadership emerge over ending the conflict, with hardliners opposing talks and pragmatists viewing negotiations as a way to gain concessions.
