The club has been located at the site since 1913, originally known as the Imperial Delhi Gymkhana Club. On Friday, the Union government initiated steps to reclaim the 27.3-acre plot leased to the Delhi Gymkhana Club, stating it is needed to enhance and protect defense infrastructure. The Land and Development Office under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs sent a notice to the club secretary to begin re-entry and resumption of the premises at 2, Safdarjung Road, New Delhi. Clause 4 of the lease allows the government to take back the property if required for public purposes. The letter described the area as highly sensitive and strategic, essential for defense strengthening, security needs, institutional requirements, and related public projects linked to recent clearances near Race Course Road.
