The government has publicly identified for the first time the six service members, five from the Indian Army and one from the Air Force, who died during Operation Sindoor. The operation was India’s military response targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after the attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22 last year.
The names appear in the Roll of Honour on the National War Memorial website and have been inscribed on Wall 3D at the memorial in New Delhi under the 2025 section for personnel who died in service.
The six are Subedar Major Pawan Kumar, Rifleman Sunil Kumar who received the Vir Chakra, Lance Naik Dinesh Kumar, Aviation Technician Mood Muralinaik, Havildar Sunil Kumar Singh of the Army, and Sergeant Surendra Kumar awarded the Vayu Medal of the Air Force.
Their inclusion marks the first official confirmation of fatalities during the May 2025 operation. Until now the government had not released identities despite earlier reports.
The brief conflict began on May 7 with Indian strikes on terror camps. Pakistan responded with drones and missiles, which India countered while also striking air bases including Nur Khan and Rahimyar Khan.
