Parliament stayed gridlocked over opposition calls for a statement from the Union Home Minister on police measures against student demonstrators in the capital. On Monday the government indicated the minister would speak in the chamber, possibly ending the impasse that began with the Monsoon Session.
The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs stated the government is prepared for a full discussion on student-related matters and will answer every opposition query. He asked opposition members to avoid interruptions so the minister can deliver remarks without disturbance and urged a thorough exchange once proceedings start.
Opposition parties have claimed the police response to a June 20 demonstration was excessive and involved pellet guns. The Lok Sabha opposition leader accused the home minister of ordering the action. Both houses have seen repeated protests, slogans, and adjournments since the session opened on July 20, limiting legislative work to a few bills.
A Congress leader wrote to the Lok Sabha Speaker requesting the minister make a detailed statement on the reported incidents. The letter described the events as a national issue needing immediate review, noting that responsibility lies with the Home Ministry because Delhi Police reports to it.
With four session days left, several pending bills face uncertainty. The Congress has directed its lawmakers and allies to attend sittings on August 10, 11 and 12.
